At the 2017 AccelerateAB conference, 407 attendees in the Alberta tech industry came together in Calgary to celebrate. The Alberta roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-her-done attitude is alive and well in the tech community. A veritable “who’s who” of the movers and shakers in the province showed up; amplifying the online conversation with their social media voice. The two-day AccelerateAB event includes celebrating 15 startups that are making early waves in the industry. Day 1 was “roundtables” day, where the startup teams and founders, A100 mentors, service providers, investors etc… all rubbed elbows while learning from one another. Day 2 was the public show. AccelerateAB is an opportunity to dramatically increase the success of Alberta’s entrepreneurs, drawing international attention to what’s percolating here in the province.”
Tech is at a pivotal point in Alberta
After years of swimming in a sea of oil and gas, the industry is getting mainstream attention and traction. The feeling of optimism and having the bull by its horns was palpable at the conference.
The Calgary Herald heralds the moment: Conference finds Alberta’s tech sector revelling in spotlight after years in shadow of oil and gas
“There’s a lot of excitement, there’s a lot of interest,” said Cynthia van Sundert, executive director of The A100, an organization of experienced technology founders and executives that offers mentoring to early-stage startups and also organized this year’s conference. “Our industry is growing and always has been, but now with the (oil and gas) downturn, there’s a spotlight on us. And with that spotlight, there’s a real opportunity for us”
